Art. The Noblest Conquest: The Sport of the Horse in Europe and America, at the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens—not far from Santa Anita Racetrack in Los Angeles California—celebrates horse racing, breeding and the evolution of the thoroughbred with items ranging from a bridle maker’s catalog of 1560 to Seabiscuit’s 1938 Pimlico trophy. The show includes the first known announcement of a horse race, printed in Stuttgart in 1511; Thomas Blundeville’s first English work on horsemanship from 1565; the first book on horse anatomy, written by Carlo Ruini in 1598; lavishly illustrated works by 18th- and 19th-century equestrian artists William Cavendish and Henry Alken; racing calendars; stud books; and sporting magazines. Printed materials and artifacts are drawn mostly from the Edward Lasker Collection, a library of equestrian material donated to the Huntington in 1999. |
