Is there too much sex in the media? This is a question Americans have been disputing over since the television industry boom. Sex captivates audiences and keeps them wanting more. It also provides them with a thrilling life that they can live vicariously through. Each year it seems that producers push the limits on how much they will show on television. The beginning of this season was no different for FOX TV with the presentation of a racy and alluring show entitled Skin. The show was a spin off of the classic “Romeo and Juliet” with a love between two teenagers that is torn apart by their parents. Jewel, played by Olivia Wilde, is the daughter of an adult porn film maker; and Adam, played By D.J Cotrona, is the son of a district attorney. Their parents forbid them to see each other due to conflicts of their own, and thus the series begins.
At Alliant, it seemed that many students were captivated by the sexy show.
National television ratings proved otherwise, however, when the show came in fourth in the 9’o clock time slot. The network hoped the viewings would rise, however, on November 4, 2003, the new show was cancelled.
This was not the only show that had horrible ratings. Joe millionaire, a marriage reality show, and Howard Stern’s Syndicated T.V. show both plummeted this season. Also Coupling, a show much like Friends based on sex was cancelled after only a few episodes.
The Parents Television Council seems to think that the failure of shows like these is a sign that Americans do not want to promote pornography and promiscuity. Furthermore, the PTC believes that the notion of sex and violence sell, is being quelled by the overwhelmingly superior ratings of Christian and family shows like 7th Heaven and Joan of Arcadia.
This may not be what college students want to see on T.V., however, it appears that the television industry is slowly undergoing a change. The television networking producers may need to re-evaluate the focus of their shows if they want to keep audiences captivated in the future.

Four of the wannabe models and four unidentified young men engaged in a healthy dose of on-camera carnality which viewers of the UPN "dramality" series will get to see in heavily edited form.)
