Janet Jackson's held it down for a long time in the music game. Not only is
she talented and a multi-platinum artist, she's been one of the biggest
influences in music video in black music for the last decade. And did we mention
her sex appeal?
As any dancer knows, it's all about placement. It's how you hold your body;
the lilt of an arm, an erect neckline. Janet Jackson, a gifted dancer, if
nothing else, knows this all too well. In the business for most of
her life, her position today is one of pop diva come to reclaim her
throne.
Thirty some odd years ago, Janet Damita Jackson was just another pretty brown
girl born in the Midwest to a large (literal and figurative)
family. Today she remains a Taurus, single, a pop star. So far she's
dropped four platinum albums, she can dance her ass off and has starred in two
films. These things have remained the same.

Yet between the sassy cherub Penny on Norman Lear's angst ridden "Good Times"
through Eddie Murphy's Nutty Professor II: The Klumps, we've bore
witness to Janet's life changes: her pain, identity shifts, sexuality, alleged
pregnancies, weight fluctuations, marriages and divorces (two apiece) and
profound successes. As one of the most successful female recording artists of
all time, Janet's $20 million-dollar-an-album paycheck is second only to Mariah
Carey's.
And her videos, from the groundbreaking "Pleasure Principle" to the
tight choreography of "Miss You Much" to doing futuristic funk with
her most famous brother on "Scream" have made her one of the most influential
artists in visual music history.
What is believable, however, is Janet's ability to take a catchy chorus over
a danceable beat and work that s--it to pop heaven. And as sweet-sounding as she
is, there's obviously in Miss Jackson a hard and driven focus held up by spine
of steel. Otherwise she wouldn't have made it as far as she has or lasted as
long. She knows how to play her position. And she plays it well.
