As in years past, an obvious question hung over the last day of
Australia's fashion fest: was it a success?
Its opening had been plagued by persistent doubts, most notably those related to the absence of some of Australia's biggest names in fashion including Akira Isogawa, Wayne Cooper and Charlie Brown.
Brown, in particular, has previously drawn valuable publicity to the event by flying in international
modeling It girls Lily Cole and Jade Jagger for her shows.
But by the end of the week, the critics were silenced.
Ksubi's return after a two year hiatus was received with unrestrained applause and whistling, some even giving the collection a standing ovation, while first-timers like Gail Sorronda outshone some of the most experienced Fashion Week stalwarts.
But the absolute standout was, by all accounts, Josh Goot.
His name was the first to be rattled off by both Fashion Week impresario Simon Lock and Marie Claire editor Jackie Frank when asked who they thought were the highlights of the five-day event.
"We saw tremendous collections this week," Lock said.
"Josh Goot, Kirrily Johnston, Melanie Cutfield, Nevenka. Ksubi I thought was absolutely brilliant and two great collections today: Lee Mathews, who hasn't shown for 10 years who just made such a triumphant return, and also Romance Was Born," he said after the final show of the week.
Frank said her highlights were a combination of old favorites and new blood. -
